The Chilean LNG project created a new grass-roots LNG receiving terminal located at Quintero Bay, approximately 160 km northwest of Santiago, Chile. The project scope included complete ship unloading facilities, LNG storage, regasification and sendout facilities. The project also included provision for an early gas option to allow fast-tracking the marine facilities and LNG unloading, enabling gas to be unloaded and regasified for sendout before completion of two 160,000m3 full containment LNG storage tanks.

The multiple expansions carried out at the Isle of Grain facility converted the existing peak-shaving facility into a large import terminal with the flexibility to achieve send out, trans-shipment, and road tanker exports. The facilities added included marine works, LNG storage, 4 x 190,00m3 storage tanks, regasification and sendout systems, pipelines, loading facilities, buildings and all support systems.

This project focused on achieving substantial CO2 reduction and advancing sustainable practices in the steel-making industry. Represents an expansion of McDermott’s world-class industrial electrification capabilities into a new steel decarbonization market
Using direct reduced iron (DRI) plant and reducing electric furnace (REF) technology in combination with sustainable hydrogen led to more than 95 percent decarbonization

DRI is a relatively new production technology in which iron ores are directly reduced using natural gas or hydrogen rather than coal. The reduced iron is then processed into hot metal in an electric furnace (REF). One major advantage of the technology is that by using green electricity and a predominant hydrogen stream, the CO2 emissions from the process are much lower than when using blast furnaces.
